Shamrocks fall to Raiders 13-9

The Armstrong Shamrocks got off to a slow start and that cost them as they could never get back on track in a 12-9 loss to the Kelowna Raiders.

The Shamrocks saw Kelowna strike early on the power play with Pho Heng leading the charge, scoring five first period goals.  Most of the damage was done on the power play as the Rocks accumulated 20 minutes in penalties in the first period. Jared MacLennan was the other goal scorer in the period for the Raiders with Armstrong getting on the board when Brett Heitman adding his first of two on the night. The Raiders lead 6-1 after the first period.

The second period saw both teams come out to play with the Shamrocks finally getting their offence on track, opening the scoring with Kriss Yargeu firing a ball past Graham Cousins, followed up by Steve Clark adding to the total. Kelowna was able to counter when Vic Wiens scored on a break away, and Chris Phillips on a behind-the-back shot. Armstrong was able to rally back with goals by junior call-up Owen Barker and Darren Kirby. Wiens ended the scoring in the first on a broken defensive play by the Rocks, making it 9-5 after two.

The third period saw the Rocks come out quick, getting goals by Heitman and Clark to close the gap to 9-7, however, that was the closest the Rocks came as Kelowna countered back with goals by Scott Renner and Wiens. Armstrong tried to come back with another tally by Kirby and a nice outside shot from Barker, however, Heng and Wiens finished the scoring for the Raiders.
